Question: What factors affect the gravitational pull of two massive objects?
Page 36
NOW ~ CHANGE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN M1 AND M2 TO 6 km
(column 2)
9. Repeat steps 4-7
10. Fill in Column #2
AS YOU WORK ~~
For each column, Draw 1 illustrations of the simulator below your Data Table:
- Copy the graphic organizer.
- Access the University of Colorado Boulder PhET simulation called "Gravity Force Lab" (above.)
- Column 1
- Set the masses so that their centers are 4 kilometers apart on the ruler.
- Set the mass of MASS 1 (M1) (Blue) to 1 billion kg
- Set the mass of MASS 2 (M2) (Red) to 1 billion kg
- At the top of the screen you will see the force listed for each Mass.
- Fill in Column #1 in the table below with your result.
- Repeat steps 3-6, changing the mass for M2, so you will end up with data for M2 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 kg.
- The mass of M1 will remain constant at 1 Billion kg.
NOW ~ CHANGE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN M1 AND M2 TO 6 km
(column 2)
9. Repeat steps 4-7
10. Fill in Column #2
AS YOU WORK ~~
For each column, Draw 1 illustrations of the simulator below your Data Table:
- Column 1 - One with the Gravitational Force Distance of 4 km.
- Column 2 - The other with the Gravitational Force Distance of 6 km.

Create a Graph using your data.
Fill in the graph using the data you collected for Mass2 and Gravitational Force.
Conclusion Questions: (Bottom of page 37)
- Describe the variables in this simulation?
- Independent Variable (what did you change?)
- Dependent Variable (what did you observe?)
- Control (what stays the same).
- Is the gravitational force between the two object attractive, repelling, or both? Explain how you know.
- Describe the relationship between the masses of the objects and the gravitational force between them?
- Describe the other factor affecting the gravitational force between the two objects in this simulation? Explain your answer.
- Final Question: Answer in a complete sentence (at the top of page 37).
- What factors affect the gravitational pull of two massive objects?
